Copenhagen is once again poised to become the epicenter of fashion, with a vibrant showcase of Spring/Summer 2027 collections set to captivate audiences. This year marks a significant milestone for Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW), as it commemorates its 20th anniversary, solidifying its reputation as fashion’s unofficial fifth city and a pioneering force in sustainable practices. The event’s expanded reach, embracing diverse global talents and pushing the boundaries of innovation, underscores its evolution from a regional industry gathering to a powerful international platform.

A Milestone Season: Expanding Horizons and Celebrating Nordic Design

The upcoming CPHFW season promises to be the most expansive yet, with shows strategically positioned across iconic Copenhagen landmarks, from the grandeur of the Opera Park to the cultural significance of the Statens Museum for Kunst. The city’s historic cobbled streets and picturesque waterfronts will transform into dynamic runways, providing a unique backdrop for the diverse array of designers presenting their Spring/Summer 2027 collections. This anniversary edition is a testament to the enduring appeal and growing influence of the Scandinavian fashion scene, which has consistently demonstrated a commitment to both aesthetic innovation and ethical responsibility.

While the spotlight will undoubtedly shine on established Nordic talent such as Henrik Vibskov, Baum und Pferdgarten, and Rotate, the event has made a conscious effort to broaden its international appeal. This strategic inclusion comes at a pivotal moment for the Nordic fashion industry, which has navigated a period of considerable flux. The departure of heavyweights like Ganni and Cecilie Bahnsen to Paris, alongside the closure of beloved brands like Saks Potts and (Di)vision, highlighted the challenges faced by even the most successful players. In response, CPHFW has proactively opened its doors, inviting a curated selection of international designers to participate.

How Sustainability Standards Changed the Trajectory of Copenhagen Fashion Week

This season, New York-based label Collina Strada will make its debut in Copenhagen, occupying the inaugural seasonal guest slot. This significant inclusion is bolstered by the support of The Climate Pledge, an organization with which Collina Strada is a signatory, underscoring the shared commitment to environmental stewardship. Further enriching the international dialogue, Lagos Fashion Week’s Iamisigo will return for its third guest appearance at CPHFW, fostering cross-continental creative exchange. Additionally, the Milan-based brand Institution will join as a one-off participant, a recognition of its recent triumph at the Zalando Visionary Awards.

Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week, articulated the organization’s strategic vision: "Over the years, Copenhagen Fashion Week has gone from a regional industry event where the shows were front and center, to an international platform with very clear values and a clear direction for how we see the future of fashion shaping up. Our focus on sustainability seems to have resonated with brands that either haven’t done a show before, or haven’t previously considered Copenhagen. It’s a great opportunity for exchange." This sentiment highlights CPHFW’s dual mission: to champion local design excellence while fostering a global community united by shared progressive values.

A Groundbreaking Commitment to Sustainability: Navigating Challenges and Driving Change

CPHFW’s leadership in sustainability is not merely a trend but a foundational principle that has guided its evolution. The introduction of minimum sustainability standards in 2020 was a bold move, setting a precedent for the industry by requiring brands to actively address their environmental and social impacts to be included in the official schedule. These ambitious standards, which encompass areas such as material sourcing, waste reduction, and ethical labor practices, were significantly ahead of their time and have since spurred tangible changes within participating brands.

However, the path towards widespread sustainability adoption has not been without its hurdles. In 2025, CPHFW faced scrutiny when greenwashing specialist Tanja Gotthardsen and the Danish consumer organization Forbrugerrådet Tænk filed a complaint with the Danish Consumer Ombudsman, alleging greenwashing against CPHFW and seven participating brands. This legal challenge coincided with a broader industry trend where some companies appeared to be scaling back their sustainability commitments amidst economic uncertainties.

How Sustainability Standards Changed the Trajectory of Copenhagen Fashion Week

Reflecting on this period, Thorsmark stated, "I wasn’t surprised that someone wanted to question or challenge our framework. Constructive criticism is what pushed our fashion week in this direction in the first place – had there not been criticism of our industry, we probably would have gone on as usual, without the minimum sustainability standards. I was maybe slightly surprised that a case was filed, but I was confident that our framework was extensive and thorough. We have been advised by top international experts in different fields from materials to human rights – you name it – and we knew it was ambitious for the industry, which didn’t have any requirements before, and very little by way of legislation. I was also confident that it was being used in the way it was intended, to screen brands."

The Danish Consumer Ombudsman ultimately dropped the case, validating CPHFW’s rigorous framework and its adherence to Danish guidelines on sustainability communication. This outcome not only defended CPHFW’s integrity but also reinforced its position as a leader committed to transparency and accountability. The experience, though challenging, served as an opportunity for external validation and further solidified the organization’s resolve.

The impact of CPHFW’s sustainability initiatives extends beyond its own schedule. Several other fashion weeks and industry bodies have recognized the value of its approach. Berlin, Oslo, and Amsterdam have adopted CPHFW’s minimum sustainability standards in full, while the British Fashion Council has begun integrating similar requirements into its Newgen program. This ripple effect underscores the power of fashion weeks as influential platforms for driving systemic change. As Thorsmark explained, "What a fashion week or fashion council can do is set a common direction or a common language for fashion. Having a framework helps brands turn their ambition into action. One thing we’ve heard repeatedly is how our sustainability standards became the catalyst for the changes they’ve always wanted to make."

Innovation at the Forefront: Digital Passports and Talent Development

Beyond its commitment to environmental and social responsibility, CPHFW is embracing technological innovation to enhance its operations and further its mission. This season introduces a partnership with digital product passport (DPP) provider Renoon, leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to streamline the implementation and assessment of sustainability standards. This collaboration addresses a significant operational challenge: the time and resources required for manual review and screening of brands against complex criteria.

"We’re very excited to partner with Renoon to explore how AI can strengthen the implementation of our minimum sustainability standards," Thorsmark commented. "One of the biggest challenges for fashion weeks and councils looking to use the framework has been the time and resources they need to invest, in order to manually review and screen participating brands against the criteria. By integrating AI into the assessment, we can make implementation much more efficient and scalable, while maintaining the rigor and credibility of the framework. This not only strengthens the experience for our existing partners, but also makes it easier for new fashion weeks and councils to adopt the framework. We’re optimistic that this will help accelerate its international uptake, and, ultimately, increase the collective impact of our industry."

This technological integration is expected to facilitate broader adoption of CPHFW’s sustainability framework by other fashion weeks and industry organizations, amplifying its collective impact.

The anniversary season also shines a light on emerging talent. Jewelry giant Pandora is providing significant support for the 20th-anniversary gala at the Danish Royal Opera and is also backing the New Talent program. This sponsorship will provide crucial resources and visibility for graduates of the scheme, including designers Taus and Anne-Sofie Madsen, who will receive jewelry for their collections.

Footwear brands are also making a notable presence. Paolina Russo is set to collaborate with Ecco, while Stem will partner with Camper. Stem’s involvement is particularly noteworthy as it revisits its successful 2022 collaboration with Ganni, this time transforming Ganni’s deadstock materials into new designs. This initiative marks Stem’s foray into synthetic fabrics, all while adhering to its signature zero-waste ethos. The season will also see the CPHFW debut of Finnish brand Almada Label, alongside the return of established names like Mfpen, Stine Goya, and Alectra Rothschild / Masculina, who are rejoining the show schedule after brief hiatuses.

Looking Ahead: Shaping the Future of Fashion Week

As Copenhagen Fashion Week enters its third decade, its trajectory points towards continued leadership in sustainability, a commitment to fostering global dialogue, and a dedication to embracing innovation. The past 20 years have seen CPHFW transform from a regional showcase into a global nexus for fashion that prioritizes purpose alongside aesthetics.

"To have been able to witness how our minimum sustainability standards have made an actual difference, and how setting very clear expectations has encouraged real improvements, has been very encouraging," Thorsmark reflected. "Whether it’s in the field of sustainability or other aspects – such as talent development, innovation, or collective action – we will continue using our platform to create value beyond the runway."

This forward-looking perspective signals CPHFW’s enduring ambition to be more than just a fashion event. It aims to be a catalyst for positive change, demonstrating that creativity and commerce can, and must, coexist with responsibility and respect for the planet. The Spring/Summer 2027 season stands as a powerful testament to this vision, celebrating two decades of progress while setting a clear course for a more sustainable and inclusive future for the fashion industry.
